An abscess is a pocket of pus under the skin that antibiotics alone will not clear: it has to be drained. At La Michoacana we do it with local anesthesia, walk-in, and the relief is almost immediate.
How do I know it is an abscess?
A red, warm, painful lump that grows over days, sometimes with a white or yellow point and tight skin. It can come with fever or with hardened tissue around it. If it is in the groin, armpit or face, get it looked at sooner.
What happens during the visit?
The area is evaluated, local anesthesia is given and a small incision releases the pus. The cavity is cleaned, sometimes packed with gauze so it keeps draining, and covered. The procedure takes a few minutes and most people feel better on the way out.
Do I need antibiotics?
Not always. Drainage alone resolves many cases, and antibiotics are kept for fever, spreading infection or conditions such as diabetes. That is decided when we examine you, not over the phone.
What comes next?
You get cleaning instructions and a follow-up visit to check the wound. If it fills up again, the pain increases or fever appears, come back. Abscesses that keep returning in the same spot deserve a workup: sometimes there is an underlying cause, such as undiagnosed high blood sugar.
What if the abscess is still hard?
When the infection has not formed pus yet, draining does not help. In that case it is treated with antibiotics and local heat and rechecked in two or three days: if a pocket forms, it is drained then.
