How does it start?

Almost always from cutting the nail curved or too short, tight shoes or an impact. The edge buries itself in the skin, the area swells and shoe friction makes it worse every day. The big toe takes most of the cases.

What does the procedure involve?

The toe is cleaned and local anesthesia is given; then only the ingrown portion is removed, not the whole nail. If there is infection, it is drained and treatment is prescribed. It takes a few minutes and you walk out with the toe bandaged.

What aftercare is needed?

Keep the toe clean and dry, wear loose shoes for a few days and avoid running or carrying weight at first. Internet remedies, such as cutting a "V" in the nail or packing cotton without cleaning, usually end in infection.

What if I have diabetes?

Do not treat it at home. Any foot procedure in a person with diabetes deserves medical review, because circulation and sensation change the risk. Here you can combine it with wound care and a blood sugar check.
