Our urology visit covers urinary infections, overactive bladder and urine leaks, in Spanish and with no insurance needed; you can walk in or call to book. How do I know it is a urinary infection?

Burning when you urinate, constant urges with little output, cloudy or strong-smelling urine and discomfort in the lower abdomen. With fever, chills or lower back pain it is different: it may have reached the kidney, and that gets checked the same day.

What happens during the visit?

A general urinalysis and, depending on the case, a culture to identify the bacteria. Your symptoms and history are reviewed, because not every infection is treated the same: pregnancy, diabetes and repeated infections all matter.

Why do they keep coming back?

Treatments stopped halfway, not drinking enough water, holding it for hours and, for some women, the menopausal stage. If it happens three or more times a year, it is worth investigating rather than simply treating again.

What helps in the meantime?

Drinking more water and not holding it. What does not help: self-medicating with leftover antibiotics from another occasion, because it masks symptoms and complicates the culture.

Do I need a culture or is a urinalysis enough?

A general urinalysis is enough in most straightforward cases. A culture is ordered when the infection keeps returning, when previous treatment did not work, in pregnancy or with fever: it identifies which bacteria it is and which treatment actually works on it.

Do you treat overactive bladder and urine leaks?

Yes. Sudden urges that don't give you time to reach the bathroom, getting up several times a night to urinate, or losing a few drops when you cough, laugh or lift something heavy are assessed in this same visit. A urine test rules out an infection first; then we go over your medications, how much water, coffee or soda you drink each day and, for men, the prostate with a PSA test. From there we set out the treatment and the habit changes that help, and whatever is prescribed you can buy at the clinic pharmacy before you leave.

Could it be something other than an infection?

Yes. Burning when urinating also comes with sexually transmitted infections, irritation, or prostate problems in men. That is why your symptoms are reviewed before treating, and if the test is clean we look for the real cause instead of repeating antibiotics.
