Tuberculosis testing is required for healthcare jobs, schools and immigration paperwork. Here it is placed, read and documented with a date.
How does the skin test (PPD) work?
A small amount is injected under the skin of the forearm, raising a small bubble. You must come back 48 to 72 hours later for the reading: what gets measured is firmness, not redness. If you do not return within that window, the test is void and has to be repeated.
Can I shower or cover it?
Yes, you can get your arm wet as usual. What you must not do is scratch, rub or apply creams or bandages over the area, because that alters the reading.
What does a positive result mean?
That there was contact with the bacteria, not necessarily that you have active tuberculosis or that you are contagious. The next step is usually a chest X-ray and an assessment of symptoms such as long-lasting cough, fever, night sweats or weight loss.
Does it work for my immigration case?
The I-693 exam includes its own tuberculosis test, which for applicants age 2 and older is a blood test (IGRA) under CDC rules. If you are in that process, it is better done within the immigration exam rather than separately.
How often does it need repeating?
It depends who asks for it. Many healthcare jobs and schools require it yearly; other processes only once. If you have ever tested positive, the skin test is not repeated: it is documented with your history and, when appropriate, a chest X-ray.
