Your thyroid regulates energy, weight, temperature and mood. When it runs fast or slow, the symptoms get mistaken for stress for months. A blood sample settles it.

Which symptoms raise suspicion?

Fatigue that does not lift, gaining or losing weight without changing habits, hair loss, dry skin, feeling cold when nobody else does, constipation, irregular periods. If the thyroid is running fast: anxiety, palpitations, hand tremor, insomnia and sweating.

Which test is done?

It starts with TSH, which catches most cases, and free T4 and T3 are added depending on the result. No fasting needed. If you already take thyroid medication, take it that day after the sample is drawn.

What does treatment look like?

Hypothyroidism is treated with a daily hormone tablet taken on an empty stomach, and the dose is adjusted with follow-up labs at six to eight weeks until yours is right. Hyperthyroidism needs a different workup and, in several cases, a specialist referral.

How often should I be rechecked?

While the dose is being adjusted, every two or three months. Once stable, once or twice a year. Pregnancy and major weight changes call for an earlier check, because the dose stops fitting. The lab and the follow-up are in the same place.

Does the thyroid affect pregnancy?

Yes, quite a bit. Needs change in pregnancy and the dose that worked before usually falls short, so it is worth checking TSH as soon as you know you are pregnant and repeating it during follow-up.

You pay per visit, with no insurance involved. We take cash, debit cards, credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Discover) and phone payments. We do not take checks. Ask about the price of your service when you arrive or over the phone: we tell you before we start, so you know what you are paying.
