Women's health is not one visit a year: it is three or four things worth checking at each stage, plus a handful of warning signs that should not wait. This guide sorts both, so you know what is due now and what a walk-in clinic can handle.

What to check by age

Ages 20 to 39. Pap smear from age 21, every three years. Blood pressure every year. Sexually transmitted infection testing if you are sexually active; the CDC recommends chlamydia and gonorrhea screening yearly before 25. And iron, if your periods are heavy: anemia is the most common cause of the fatigue people blame on stress.

Ages 40 to 49. The mammogram conversation begins. The USPSTF recommends starting at 40, every two years. It is also worth checking blood sugar and cholesterol, especially if you had gestational diabetes.

Age 50 and up. Mammogram every two years, thyroid check if symptoms appear, and colon screening from age 45. Menopause brings changes in sleep, weight and mood that can be managed: there is no need to put up with them in silence.

Signs that should not wait

  • Bleeding between periods, after menopause, or far heavier than usual.
  • Discharge with a bad smell, intense itching or burning when urinating that does not ease within a day.
  • Pelvic pain that keeps increasing, with or without fever.
  • A new lump in the breast, skin dimpling or nipple discharge.

None of those improve by waiting for the next appointment: they get checked when they happen.

What a clinic like this handles

Pap smears and cultures, pregnancy tests, birth control such as pills and the injection, implant removal, treatment of vaginal and urinary infections, and lab work in the same place, all in Spanish.

The practical part

No insurance and no appointment needed. We are open Monday to Saturday 9 AM to 9 PM and Sunday 9 AM to 7 PM, at 6500 Spencer Hwy Ste 180, Pasadena. If you are uninsured, see also the options in Pasadena. If you have never had a Pap smear or it has been years, that is the first step: read how often it is due and come when you can. Phone: (832) 617-7439.
